One of the arches at Bryce Canyon

We have seen the signs for Gathland State Park on our trips To Deep Creek but never stopped until today. Glad we did. This was the site of the 1862 Civil War Battle of South Mountain and it later became the mountain top estate of war correspondent and novelist George Alfred Townsend. The War Correspondents Arch stands 50 feet high and 40 feet wide
The Roosevelt Arch is at the entrance from the North It was dedicated by Theodore Roosevelt on 24 April 1903. It was hard to get a good shot since the sun was right behind the arch and we forgot our lens hood.
