We weren’t sure what all these sticks were so we went on line and found a picture with a note that these are erosion sticks. 8,000 acres or 12 sq miles of marsh land have been lost since the park was established. The sticks are just one of several different methods to help restore some of the wetlands

We decided to head to Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is a waterfowl sanctuary for birds migrating along the critical migration highway. When we got there we discovered that a major part of the refuge was closed for the day for hunting. But we did spot these two blue herons. The volunteer told us that because it’s been so warm that it will probably be late November before most of the waterfowl arrive – so will have to go back next month
What a great day. Decided to take a long weekend and go to Chincoteague, Virginia and the weather was just perfect. We have heard a lot about Chincoteague but have never been. We stopped in Cambridge at the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge and took a bunch of photos. Then we stopped at two wineries – tasted some wine and bought a few bottles of our favorites. We are staying at a nice Bed and Breakfast in Onancock. Onancock is a nice small town. They celebrate on the second Fridays and some of the stores stay open and they have live music.
