National Elk Preserve in Jackson. Around 7,500 elk spend November to May on the refuge and up to 1,000 bison. You might also catch a glimpse of a wolf or two. The main winter attraction is the chance to see the elk up close from a horse drawn sleigh. That sounds wonderful. We are beginning to think we need to come back in winter and in summer to see the wildflowers. Around 10,000 lbs. of elk antlers are auctioned each year

View of Jenny Lake from top of the trail
Weather forecast called for partly cloudy conditions today so we decided to head to Jenny Lake for a hike. Jenny Lake is named after a shoshone Indian who married an Englishman – Richard “Beaver Dick” Leigh. We got this picture on the way up the trail. THEN we saw this big dark cloud off in the distance when we were about half way up the trail Oh no!! It started to sprinkle. We kept hiking and it started to rain harder. Fortunately, the thunder and lightning were some distance away. Michael checked the small backpack but……… there was only one poncho. So since he is such a great guy, he gave me the poncho to wear. We made it to Hidden Falls – which is an 80 ft. waterfalls. Got some great pictures. We hiked about 3 miles and then took the shuttle boat back to the Visitor’s Center. When we docked, we noticed there were small ponchos for sale so we bought some just in case.

This shot was taken from spot where Ansel Adams’s took his famous shot. I imagine the fir trees have grown a lot since he took his famous photos and that he had a better view of the river

After spending time at Mormon Row, we headed to the Snake River Overlook. During our float trip last night, the guide pointed out the overlook and said that’s where Ansel Adams’s famous shot of the Tetons was taken and has imitated with less success by generations of photographers. There is a marker designating the spot where he took the photo and a picture of him standing on the roof of his car taking photos.
